TOP 5 TIPS FROM STUDENTS ON HOW TO PREPARE THEM FOR MOBILITIES
Introduction
During the project we had the opportunity to work with students who had taken part or were thinking of taking part in Erasmus+ mobilities. This allowed us to gather firsthand insights and expectations from students about the information they felt they needed before embarking on their mobility experience.
This can also be used as a checklist during mobilities to help ensure students receive the information and support they want from us.
- 1. Pre-departure practical information
- Clothing and packing advice
Information about what clothes to bring or buy before going, for both work and free time.
- Local transport and navigation
Information about local transport including usefulness, how to get from the airport, nearest stations to work from where you live etc.
- Healthcare and emergencies
Information on the healthcare system and who to contact when sick, plus help with insurance. Important phone numbers; police, hospital, taxi, contact persons etc.
- 2. Culture and language preparation
- Basic language skills
Help students get access to online language courses e.g. EU Academy, where you can learn a little of the local language including pronunciation
- Cultural understanding
Suggest videos to students on what to expect in the country including cultural aspects and timetables or organise workshops on these topics.
Information about local food, drinks, and suggestions about places to visit and places to avoid.
- 3. Academic and logistical support
- Academic preparation
Encourage taking preparatory courses before departure.
Help with paperwork, agreements and ensuring that students have the required knowledge of what is expected of them.

Ensure that students have contact information of their work placement (address and phone number).

Organise a first night dinner or social event for bonding.
- Student mentorship
Connect students travelling on mobility with those already in the host country.
- 5. Practical workshops and meetings
- Workshop and pre-departure meetings
Hold workshops on common challenges and cultural differences.
Set up online meetings with the work placement and host in advance to provide opportunities for students to ask questions before leaving.
